From the view of those who are passionate for birding, the perspective that Lombok renders is just across Wallace’s Line, allowing support to an avifauna that is quite different. Lombok doesn’t have any physical ailments: the opportunities are vast in being able to view a few different species that could not be seen by heading to more remote locations that are located further east.

Birding on Lombok: Gunung Rinjani and the Central Massif

In the mountainous centre, you can find the best of Lombok Island’s bird identification spots. The slopes of this mountain terrain are characterized as good forest conditions, giving way to higher altitudes across scrub and grassland. Here you will want to keep a sharp eye out for the pigeons, raptors, and honey eaters.

As you make your way through the summit of Rinjani, you will pass some beautiful farmland, reaching the edge of Gunung Rinjani National Park. After climbing through prime conditioned forest (about 7-8km), you will enter birding scopes where you will see pigeons, thrushes, forest kingfishers, and the Elegant Pitta.

Birding on Lombok: Coastal Lowlands

These are featured on all sides of Gunung Rinjani and compared to the higher slope, are generally stripped of any patches of forest terrain. If you want to step out of the comfort level of staying near the coast, it can remain beneficial as many of the more widespread birds are typically found clinging to smaller patches of forests that run along ridges and slopes. Those of which include: kingfishers, honeyeaters, and pigeons.
